What are black holes? They may hold the key to unifying Einstein's gravity and quantum mechanics. Are they the final stage of a collapsing star? Or do primordial black holes reveal a different origin? This book presents the latest insights into these enormous challenges.

What exactly are black holes? Astronomers take spectacular photographs of these objects, but theoretical physicists are racking their brains trying to understand how they are formed and what will be their final fate. It is believed that they are the solution to one of the greatest challenges, i.e. the enormous difference between Einstein’s model of gravity and quantum mechanics. Both theories describe our nature extremely accurately on a large scale and on a small scale. The former is a deterministic theory, while the latter is far from deterministic. Bringing these different models under one umbrella has not been possible to date. Is a black hole the final stage of a collapsing star, as predicted by Einstein’s model? Yet, primordial black holes are found in the early beginning of our universe that cannot possibly have been formed from existing stars. In this book, the reader will find all the latest insights into black holes. Some passages may be a little technical. These are not necessary to follow the main thread. This book will give the reader a good impression of the enormous challenges facing theoretical physicists.

Marten Slagter was born in 1980 in Bussum, The Netherlands. He is self-taught in philosophy and AI. His interests lie in metaphysical topics and he contributed significantly to this book. He lives in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Dr Reinoud Jan Slagter was born in 1949 in Bussum, The Netherlands. He is a theoretical physicist who obtained his Master’s degree at Utrecht University, The Netherlands under the supervision of Nobel Prize winner Professor G. ‘t Hooft in 1980. He obtained his PhD in 1986 at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Professor K. Gaemers (NIKHEF), Professor E. van den Heuvel (Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy) and co-supervisor ‘t Hooft. His research in General Relativity Theory (GRT) focuses on compact objects such as cosmic strings, black holes, monopoles and instantons. Recently, his attention has turned to the quantum aspects of GRT, in particular the paradoxes that arise when attempting to unify Quantum Mechanics with GRT. After his retirement, he started the Astronomisch Fysisch Onderzoek Nederland (ASFYON) research centre with fellow physicists. He lives in Bussum, The Netherlands.
