Slavery and the past are interconnected; there is a tension between a former time of human subjugation and the time after when that captivity can still be remembered. In a sense, this volume probes this seeming contradiction, the glory of freedom’s release and the tension with a past when freedom was denied. It also argues that the existence of slavery, in modern forms, today offers continuing evidence of man’s inhumanity to man—and the resulting absence of freedom for millions of people.

David W. Bulla is a Professor of Communication and a historian of the press at Augusta University, USA. He is the author of eight books, including Lincoln’s Censor and Lincoln Mediated (with Gregory A. Borchard). His latest book is titled Gandhi, Advocacy Journalism, and the Media.

Karen E. Bravo is the Dean of the Robert H. McKinney School of Law at Indiana University. Her law journal publications include Black Interests in Slaveries and Interrogating Every Person’s Roles in Today’s Slaveries. She is the founder of the Slavery Past, Present, and Future Global Meetings project.

Dr. Judith N. Onwubiko is a Lecturer of Law at London South Bank University, UK. She is also a Steering Committee Member of the Slavery Past, Present, and Future Global Meetings. Her principal interest is the regulation of slavery in indigenous, state, and international law.

Kremena Dimitrova is an illustrator-as-historian, lecturer of Visual Culture, and practice-based Ph.D. researcher in decolonizing history through comics at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. She specializes in socially engaged interventions and visual storytelling in the heritage sector, with a focus on unearthing hidden and marginalized narratives.
