This book highlights the Holocaust-related research of the historian, archeologist, and professor, Rabbi Richard A. Freund. Richard was a pioneering force in non-invasive archaeology, wherein geophysical techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry are used at Holocaust sites to collect data used in concert with testimony and archival research to write or rewrite the history of the Holocaust. The chapters’ authors span the breath of Holocaust studies and science, and include geophysicists who are experts in applying geophysical techniques in a historical context, geographers skilled in mapping and spatial analysis, filmmakers and film students, archaeologists that focus on the Holocaust, and academics specializing in Judaic studies, Jewish life and the Holocaust. It is comprehensive but non-technical and is a resource for anyone interested in melding science with history and uncovering the often lost or hidden aspects of the Holocaust.

Philip Reeder is a professor at the Center for Environmental Research and Education within the School of Science and Engineering at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He was previously Dean of the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Duquesne. He has a PhD in geography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA. He has completed research and published numerous book chapters and articles related to the geoarchaeology of the ancient Maya in Belize, using geoscience to interpret biblical sites in Israel, and using science to write and rewrite the history of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe.

  • “A fascinating and impressively comprehensive survey of a professional life extraordinarily well-lived. The regard in which Richard was held both as a historian and as a human is palpable and enormously affecting. The result is both absorbing and deeply moving.”
    - James Bulgin Head of Public History, Imperial War Museums
  • “This volume dramatically testifies to Professor/Rabbi Richard Freund’s monumental contribution to Holocaust studies, especially his use of archaeological techniques to throw new light on this dark chapter of Jewish history […] revealing previously unknown stories of suffering and heroism.”
    - Simcha Jacobovici Three-time Emmy winning documentarian and New York Times best-selling author
  • "Richard Freund was one of the greatest archaeologists of his generation, but, more importantly, he was a great popular translator of his work – his insistence on remembering and honoring some of the most painful periods of human history is what made him truly unique. This book is a tribute and testament to those skills; it should be required reading for anyone who cares about our shared past."
    - Matthew Shaer Journalist for the New York Times Magazine and author of Among Righteous Men: A Tale of Vigilantes and Vindication in Hasidic Crown Heights and Untergang der Bounty (DuMont True Tales)
