The Sentinel Asia (SA) initiative is a voluntary, grassroots, and best-efforts–based collaboration between regional space agencies and disaster management agencies for regional humanitarian purposes, applying satellite remote sensing and Web-GIS technologies to assist disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region. This book provides its history, framework, implementation approaches, how it operates, and its achievements, providing a good case study on how local partners have constructively collaborated to apply satellite remote sensing to support disasters management of over 450 disasters in the region. It also introduces how regional space agencies have effectively interfaced with the regional disaster management community, including ADRC and national disaster management organizations, as well as local academia (university, research and technical institutes). This book summarizes the activities of SA over the first decade from its conceptual inception in 2004, commemorating its 10th anniversary, and will be a useful example for similar international collaborations around disaster response elsewhere.

Kazuya Kaku received a Master’s degree from Kyoto University, Japan, in 1978 and a PhD from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2010. He previously worked with JAXA and the Sentinel Asia project.

Alexander Held currently leads the CSIRO AquaWatch Australia Mission. Previously, as Director of the CSIRO Centre for Earth Observation, he has supported the establishment of new satellite calibration/validation infrastructure and led the development of innovative science in remote sensing. In 2004, he spearheaded the establishment of the Sentinel Asia program with JAXA. He received the COSPAR Massey Award in 2022.

Masahiko Nagai received a Master’s degree from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, in 2001 and a PhD from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 2005. He is currently a director of the Center for Research and Application for Satellite Remote Sensing, Yamaguchi University, Japan.

Koji Suzuki is Project Director at Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) and Visiting Professor at Kobe University. For more than 5 years, he served as a co-chair for Steering Committee of Sentinel Asia.
