This book puts forth the case for metaphysical idealism, and opposes the dominant concern of contemporary philosophers with understanding man and the universe within materialist and naturalist paradigms. The idealist point of view exposes the limitations of realism as a metaphysical theory, and attempts to show that the materialist and naturalist conception of man and nature is not only inadequate, but also certainly false, given the fact that human nature cannot be understood in terms of materialist categories. The book highlights the fact that the world has conscious phenomena which materialism and naturalism cannot adequately explain.
Taking the primacy of consciousness as a basic postulate, the author argues for a metaphysical idealism that aims to show that human nature is more spiritual than material, and that the universe is an intelligible system of cosmic phenomena. In short, the world needs to be understood in terms of mind, which is a primary reality.
