This book contains information about the physical processes of the formation and forecasting of adverse meteorological phenomena in the tropical region. This information includes, firstly, the theorical foundations of physical processes, and secondly, a guide to short-range weather forecasting. Moreover, the book presents practical methods of short-term weather forecasting in Northeast Brazil, using synoptic and thermodynamic analysis, satellite data and numerical models.

This book can be used for: student education, for undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students of meteorology; operational weather forecasting in the tropical region by professionals in meteorology, such as professors, researchers, and operational meteorologists; verification of forecasting methods for other tropical regions; and development of automatic methods for short-term weather forecasting of such phenomena as heavy and light rain, thunderstorms, low visibility, haze, and fog.

Natalia Fedorova graduated from Moscow State University, Russia, and earned a PhD from the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, and was a senior researcher there for 20 years. Since 1995, she has been a professor in Brazil at the Federal University of Pelotas and the Federal University of Alagoas, and is currently Full Professor. Her research interest is short-term weather forecasting and she has published 17 books, 16 book chapters, 81 articles in scientific journals and 204 in annals of events, 34 course conclusion papers, and 74 scientific initiations.

Vladimir Levit graduated from the Ural State University, Russia, and earned a PhD at the Russian Academy of Sciences. For many years, he was a senior and leading researcher at the Kurchatov Institute, Russia. Since 1995, he has been a university professor in Brazil at the Federal University of Pelotas and the Federal University of Alagoas. His research focusses on the problems of nuclear energy, the environment, and the physics of the atmosphere. He has published 12 books, 20 book chapters, 59 articles in scientific journals, 155 articles in the annals of events, 26 course conclusion papers, and 54 scientific initiations.
