Biodiversity is among the richest treasures of the earth. Despite their small size, microbes play a vital role in environmental monitoring and making the earth sustainable. Microorganisms preserve and assist plants and animals o either directly or indirectly, and, due to their omnipresence in nature, they inhabit conditions such as extreme temperatures, water, soil, salt, medical wastes, agricultural wastes, and air.

Microbes are also important in human culture and play an essential role in existence of life. They are present in food fermentation, sewage treatment, medical, agricultural, and soil waste, antibiotics, soil fertility, model organisms, and human microbiota, aid with decomposition, and are responsible for infectious diseases. This volume represents an important contribution to the field, highlighting the importance of microbial biodiversity to society.

Dr P. Ponmurugan is currently working as Associate Professor in the Department of Botany at Bharathiar University, India. He has around 19 years of teaching and research experience, and has published 130 journal articles. He is the author of 21 text books on biotechnology, and acts as Reviewer and Associate Editor for the Journal of Genes, Genomes and Genomics and Genomics and Proteomics. He is a Fellow of the Indian Society for Biotechnology, the Indian Society for Technology Education, and the Nature Science Foundation.

Dr J. Senthil Kumar, MSc, MPhil, SET, is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Sri Krishna Arts and Science College, India. He has authored 18 journal articles and two book chapters, and is the editor of two volumes.
