A protistologist and parasitologist, he studied parasitic protozoa at the University of Lille during his doctoral studies, and was the first chair of Protistology at the National Museum of Natural History. He is a Knight of the Legion of Honour, France, and Officer of the Palmes académiques, and the author of 190 publications on the biology and systematics of protists.
