This book challenges common views on autism and implicit meaning. Using a novel test with video-based conversational exchanges, this study’s results contradict previous findings, showing that people with ASD can understand non-literal meaning.

Yhara Formisano has a Master’s degree (from the University of Siena, Italy) and a PhD (from the University of Perugia, Italy) in Linguistics. Her research interests include pragmatic impairment in autism spectrum disorders and pragmatic competence in L1 and L2. She also conducts research in the field of second language acquisition, with a special focus on English, and is member of a research group investigating manner of speaking verbs in English from a cognitive linguistics perspective.
