The book provides a very accessible introduction to language variation, illustrated with compelling examples and drawing insightfully on a wide range of readings. It reflects the vitality of language variation in its multifaceted pursuits, and views language variation as a key common theme among the different branches of linguistics. This view does not limit its scope to sociolinguistics; rather it includes other branches such as stylistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis.
