This book provides critical accounts of the most important topics in sociolinguistics, stylistics, communication, pragmatics and discourse analysis. It will serve as a valuable reference for students of linguistics, sociology, communication studies and discourse studies, as it guides them on how to perceive language variation in different fields.

The book provides a very accessible introduction to language variation, illustrated with compelling examples and drawing insightfully on a wide range of readings. It reflects the vitality of language variation in its multifaceted pursuits, and views language variation as a key common theme among the different branches of linguistics. This view does not limit its scope to sociolinguistics; rather it includes other branches such as stylistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis.
