The book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the most modern concepts and tools needed to perform prospective and retrospective ecological risk assessments of environmental stressors, and will therefore be useful for students, teachers, scientists, regulators, and professionals in environmental consulting.

Experimental methods and predictive theoretical approaches are described to evaluate and estimate the exposure of ecosystems to environmental stressors and to investigate their effects on different hierarchical levels of ecological organization (individuals, populations, communities, ecosystems). Specific sections are dedicated to the persistence and bioavailability of contaminants, bioaccumulation models, and the mechanisms of global pollution. Risk assessment procedures for the most relevant classes of traditional and emerging stressors, including physical agents, are described in detail in specific sections. Finally, regulatory instruments and public perception of risk are discussed.

Marco Vighi received his degree in biology at the University of Milano, Italy, and was a research assistant at the Water Research Institute of the Italian National Research Council. He was Professor of Agricultural Ecotoxicology at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Milano. He was also as Professor of Ecology, Applied Ecology and Ecotoxicology at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy, where he led the Research Group on Ecotoxicology. He retired in November 2015. From December 2015 to July 2020, he was Principal Investigator of the Ecotoxicology Research Group at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies (IMDEA) Water Institute, Spain, of which he is still an external consultant. He is a member of the Scientific Committees on Toxicology and Ecotoxicology of the European Commission (now SCHEER), and a consultant for the United Nations Procurement Division, United Nations Environment Programme, and World Health Organization. In 2018, he won the Environmental Education Award from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). He is author of more than 200 scientific papers and books.
