This book highlights the usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of lung and thoracic tumors. MRI will become a standard examination for lung cancer, pulmonary nodules/masses, and thoracic neoplasms. This is due to it being economical and providing no radiation exposure to patients. Compared to computerized tomography (CT), MRI allows for qualitative analysis of benign or malignant disease, not just morphology. Compared to positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET-CT), MRI enables early assessment of therapeutic effects, is inexpensive, and does not require radioactive isotopes. This book is useful for the assessment of lung and thoracic neoplasms and should be recommended reading for doctors dealing with thoracic diseases. Those who will find this book most useful are physicians, respiratory physicians, radiologists and thoracic surgeons who are interested in MRI examinations, as well as MRI companies, general hospitals and publishers of radiology.

Katsuo Usuda received a PhD from Tohoku University Medical School in 1993, and he became Professor of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Kanazawa Medical University in 2011. He has been a thoracic surgery specialist for 40 years and has developed a passion for limiting radiation exposure to his patients. He has published many clinical studies highlighting the benefits of MRI examinations, and has written a total of 350 articles and 8 chapters.

  • “Dr Usuda has actively evaluated the efficacy of MRI for lung cancer and other thoracic tumors. In this book I found MRI evaluation has several advantages over conventional CT and F-18 FDG PET-CT evaluations. MRI is useful for differentiating between benign and malignant pulmonary masses, diagnosing the N factor, M factor, and stage of lung cancer, evaluating vascular, and mediastinal invasion. The results of his research into MRIs are summarized in this book. I recommend this book because it makes it easier for the reader to understand how MRI can be useful in the evaluation of lung and thoracic tumors.”
