The concept of evolution has evolved over time. This is the conclusion reached by Carlo Bellieni and Lourdes Velàzquez, examining the biological and philosophical literature that concerns this topic. From an evolution based on competition to make the fittest prevail, we have moved on to an evolution that admits the collaboration between species and of single beings with their environment, among the forces that produced it. Now we know that the environment can influence how genes mutate, even though it does not directly produce a mutation. Evolution based on competition produced Malthusianism and social Darwinism, which were used to justify the prevalence of one people over a “less suitable” one; this scheme now shows its limits.

Carlo V. Bellieni is a Professor of Paediatrics and Neonatology at the University of Siena, Italy. He has published over 400 studies. He is a member of the editorial boards of several international scientific journals and of various national and international scientific societies. He focuses on the epigenetic effect of the environment on the onset of diseases, and consequently on the importance of epigenetics on the evolution of life on earth.

Lourdes Velázquez González is a Professor of Philosophy and Bioethics at the Universidad Panamericana, Mexico City, where she is also Research and Communication Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics. She has held international positions, such as Vice-President of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP) within which she still presides over the Bioethics and Ethics of Science Commission. She is a member of the International Institute of Philosophy, Paris.
