This book covers extensive ground in the estimation of mineral resources/reserves. While covering the classic geometric methods of estimation, it extensively presents the modern statistical/geostatistical techniques of estimation. In doing so, the supporting mathematical/statistical background, essential to facilitating the understanding of modern techniques, is also included. All information presented in the book is supported by extensive explanatory diagrams. The book also covers mine planning/scheduling as well as the international codes for classification of ore reserves. This book will be of interest to all types of mining geologists, as it serves the interests of field geologists involved in surveying, drilling, and mapping as well as those who are responsible for field data analysis/interpretation and defining the geometry of orebodies. This book is a comprehensive standalone textbook which is useful for both students and as a source of reference for mining geologists.

Dr Murthy obtained a BSc (Hons) and MSc in Geology from Andhra University, India, first class first rank with three awards. He holds three doctoral degrees in Geology, Geostatistics and Musicology.
He joined the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) Ltd., India, as an executive trainee. He then held the position of general manager and established the Centre of Geostatistics. He has also worked at the Ministry of Mineral Resources in Saudi Arabia and Essar Steel India. He has travelled extensively, estimating ore worldwide.
He was awarded the Austrian Government Merit Scholarship to study at Montanistische Hochschule, Leoben, Austria, and a French Government Scholarship to study at the Centre de Geostatistique, Fontainebleau, France.
He has published around 60 articles on geology and geostatistics in national and international journals and won the National Mineral Award (1992–93), Ministry of Mines, Government of India, and the SAAEG’s (South Asian Association of Economic Geologists) Life Time Achievement Award in 2017.
