The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the health care system worldwide. There are new concerns regarding how to practice safe and effective acute and chronic pain medicine. Patients have questions regarding how to get vaccine and booster shots with underlying medical issues and chronic pain conditions. Health care providers have insufficient training regarding acute and chronic pain medicine in both inpatient and ambulatory care. This book gathers input from panels of academic and real-world expertise on complementary and alternative medicine, pharmacology, non-pharmacologic, and interventional pain procedures. This book will provide up-to date review and practical pain medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic for all disciplines of physicians, midlevel providers, nurses, and allied health team. This format will not only lay a foundation but also inspire future clinical research to promote acute and chronic pain medicine in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Eric Hsu is a Health Science Clinical Professor at the Comprehensive Pain Center, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA), USA. He has been a faculty member for the acupuncture workshop at the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) Annual Convention since 1999 and has moderated “Problem-Based Learning Discussions” at the ASA since 2007, promoting multimodal approaches to pain management. Dedicated to continued medical education (CME) in acute and chronic pain medicine, Dr Hsu has enhanced pain care standards for community healthcare providers and reinforced CDC guidelines for opioid prescriptions. He presents on pain medicine for senior medical students and teaches pain pharmacology for nurse practitioner graduate programs at UCLA. Dr Hsu co-edited and authored “Problem-Based Pain Management,” a practical reference for healthcare providers, and “Acupuncture for Pain Management,” detailing scientific and clinical applications of acupuncture in pain management.
