Extensions of Feature Inheritance

By: Gerardo Fernández-Salgueiro

This study explores the feature inheritance hypothesis, arguing that only the number feature is inherited in the CP phase, and the person feature in the vP phase. Drawing on English and Spanish, it discusses implications for Agree, Case, A-movement, phases, and Transfer.

This monograph is a study on the feature inheritance hypothesis (Chomsky 2008). Following previous collaborative work with Chao-Ting Tim Chou, Gerardo Fernández-Salgueiro explores in detail the hypothesis that only the number feature may be inherited in the CP phase, and further argues that in the vP phase it is the person feature that may undergo inheritance. Drawing on both well-known and novel empirical aspects of the syntax of English and Spanish, Fernández-Salgueiro discusses the implications of this approach for Agree, Case, A-movement, the properties of phases, and the application of Transfer. This monograph should be of interest to any scholar whose research focuses on syntactic theory.

Gerardo Fernández-Salgueiro’s research is concerned with general aspects of syntactic theory as well as specific properties of the syntax of English and Romance languages. His work has been published in international journals such as Syntax, Taiwan Journal of Linguistics, Glossa: A Journal of General Linguistics, Concentric: Studies in Linguistics, Studia Linguistica, and Canadian Journal of Linguistics, and in volumes published by renowned publishers. Gerardo Fernández-Salgueiro is associate professor of linguistics in the department of English at National Taiwan Normal University.

  • "Gerardo Fernandez-Salgueiro's lucid and sharply reasoned Extensions of Feature Inheritance provides a state-of-the art exploration of a key proposal of recent minimalism: that agreement features are transmitted from a phase head to a lower category in the course of the derivation. The book reviews the history of Inheritance, delving into its conceptual and empirical motivation as well as its technical implementation. It then develops well-supported modifications regarding which features undergo inheritance, and extends the proposal to important new domains. Rich both in empirical detail and theoretical innovation, this work is a valuable contribution to the on-going study of agreement and Case, and their place in the larger syntactic system."
