This book covers the basic concepts of acids and bases, and explores the inductive effect, resonance effect, steric effect, and solvent effect, among others, on the strength of acids or bases, as well as hydrogen bonding. It also discusses the difficulties of proposing a suitable mechanism for any reaction. The book also presents the structure, geometry, isolation and reactions of different intermediates (such as carbocations, carbanions, free radicals, carbine, nitrene, benzyne, diopolar species like nitrile oxide, nitrile imines and dienophles like α-nitrosoolefin and α-iminoolefins), supported by suitable examples.

Dr Rai is a researcher, specialising in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. His contributions in different areas of chemistry are reflected in the form of over 218 research publications in reputed national and international journals. In collaboration with Professor Hassner, Dr Rai has contributed three monographs to prestigious Pergamon series: Comprehensive Organic Synthesis (1991), Comprehensive Heterocyclic Compounds (Second Edition) (1996) and Advances in Strained and Interesting Organic Molecules (2001). He has also independently written four more monographs: Heterocycles via Oxime Cycloaddition (2008), Badukinally Savayava Rasayanshasthrada Mahatvagalu (2011), Carbohydrate Chemistry: Chemistry and Applications of Carbohydrates (2017), and Carbonyl Compounds – Chemistry and Synthetic Applications (2020).
