This book will be of interest to legal translation practitioners as well as academia specializing in comparative law and legal translation across various legal cultures and languages. It describes and tests a jurilinguistic tool of comparative componential analysis (parametrization) aimed to identify general and defining parameters of source and target legal concepts. Based on the degrees of their overlapping, translators are navigated toward the matching and coinage operations and reasoned translation solutions. The novel aspect added to the current juritraductological approach is the governing-law anchoring of parametric analyses and the syntagmatic testing of target terms against the valency and collocational ties of the source segments. The book contains numerous case studies from the English common law domain and Slovak continental law where the approach is tested on a real bijural terminological substrate (criminal law, torts, contracts, company law, civil and criminal procedure, property law). Definitions of Slovak legal concepts are glossed into English.
