This book is a collection of essays written in honour of the late Professor John Oyaro Oucho, an icon of migration scholarship in the East Africa region. The book is constructed around themes which cover the nexus between challenges and opportunities in migration and national development. The book explores environmental planning and management, community development, urbanization, human impact on the environment, human security, rural settlement, health care, and governance, and is therefore valuable to postgraduate students, humanitarian agencies and governments with concerns surrounding emerging migration issues. Several chapters highlight the debate among scholars and policy-makers on the dynamic nature of migration patterns and streams; and the impact of these on the quality of migration data, migration theories, and the monitoring and evaluation tools which are appropriate for Africa’s development planning.

Professor Elias Ayiemba’s academic career as a population geographer and demographer commenced in 1975. His research interests include human security, human impact on the environment, and sustainable environmental development, and his current research is focused on migration and sociality in emerging African urban areas. He has co-edited books and book chapters, including Food Security, Renewable Energy and Water: Insights on Sustainability (2018) and Exploring the Urbanization-migration Nexus in Nairobi, Kenya: A Human Security Analysis (2023).

Alfred T. Agwanda Otieno is Associate Research Professor at the Population Studies and Research Institute of the University of Nairobi, Kenya. His research has focused on fertility and migration, and his recent publications include Age schedules of intra-provincial migration in Kenya, Interlinkages between Migration and Inequality in Africa: Review of Contemporary Studies and Sub-national Migration Flows on Population Distribution in Kenya: Analysis Using Census Data.
