The definitive study of Newman’s theology of the church. Drawing on his essays and 20,000 lesser-known letters, Miller reveals Newman’s advocacy for involving the laity—a vision that champions Pope Francis’s call for a more inclusive, synod-like church.

Edward Jeremy Miller’s first book is a study of Newman’s ecclesiology. Miller examines Newman’s essays in his Uniform Edition, writings long familiar, and all 20,000 letters of his correspondence, materials much less known and where Newman writes to friends more bluntly. Miller’s book remains the definitive study of Newman’s theology of the church. Its new perspectives include a “dialectics of discourse,” Newman’s clever “checks and balances” strategy, and his advocacy for involving the laity in the clerical-dominated church of his day (for consulting them for their views and describing how church teachings are “received” by being understood properly). Finally, Newman’s ecclesiology would champion what Pope Francis wishes today for a “church more synod-like,” an inclusive church listening to all of its voices.

Edward Jeremy Miller received Louvain’s Doctor of Theology degree, mentored by the distinguished Newman scholar, Jan Hendrik Walgrave. He has taught and published in theology and Newman Studies for forty-five years, beginning at the Divinity School of Emory University, USA. His most recent book, It’s About Eternal Life After All: Revisiting Catholic Beliefs (2021), was completed upon retiring from Gwynedd Mercy University adjacent to Philadelphia, when awarded emeritus status. CSP is making his 1988 book, John Henry Newman on the Idea of Church, available once again to church history and Newman scholars for its continual relevance. CSP also published his edited-with-introduction book, Conscience the Path to Holiness: Walking with Newman (2014). He is an emeritus board member of the St. John Henry Newman Association and was the director of four of its national conventions.
