Protecting biodiversity is a major challenge today, and local animal breeds are a key part of it. These unique breeds contribute to each region’s natural heritage and ecological diversity. Cryopreservation—a process where we store stem cells and sperm in gene banks—helps safeguard the genetic material of these animals for future generations. This book focuses on the cryopreservation of avian (bird) stem cells and sperm, detailing the methods used to isolate, cultivate, and study these cells. It also explores their applications in medicine, veterinary science, and biotechnology, showing how these preserved genetic resources can benefit both research and conservation efforts. By securing the genetic diversity of avian species, this work supports broader efforts to protect biodiversity and maintain the richness of animal life on our planet.

Andrea Svoradová is a published author with works on microscopy of avian cells, cryopreservation of animal genetic material, and lifestyle evaluation. She has edited volumes on biological data analysis, and her notable articles include studies on mesenchymal stem cells in poultry biodiversity, cryopreserved germ cell quality, and blastodermal cell assessment using advanced microscopy techniques.

Peter Chrenek is a researcher in animal biotechnology and biodiversity with expertise in genetic embryo manipulation, educator at UKF (Univerzita Konštantína Filozofa) Nitra and SPU (Slovenská poľnohospodárska univerzita) Nitra, Slovakia, supervisor for bachelor’s to doctoral students, and international lecturer. He has authored 120+ publications, 9 monographs, and 65 peer-reviewed articles, with over 500 citations in global scientific indexes.

Lenka Kuželová is a manager of the Microscopic Analysis Laboratory, specializing in transmission electron microscopy, cell ultrastructure, and fluorescence microscopy. She leads cryopreservation of rabbit and livestock sperm for the gene bank, optimizing methods for endangered species. She also publishes extensively and collaborates on APVV projects with NPPC (Národné poľnohospodárske a potravinárske centrum) Lužianky, Slovakia, for genetic resource conservation.
