Unchecked structural damages threaten public safety. This guide to non-destructive testing (NDT) methods helps inspectors select the most applicable and cost-effective technique for detecting defects in structures using steel, concrete, fibre-reinforced polymers, and timber.

Unchecked damages and the potential for the failure of civil structures threaten public safety and can result in a significant economic impact. As such, buildings, bridges, and other structures should be inspected at short intervals to prevent the potential spread of damages and catastrophic failures. To address this, in addition to conventional visual inspection, a variety of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for damage detection have been developed and practiced over the recent decades. Most often however, the inspectors have difficulty selecting the most applicable, practical, and cost-effective technique for their purpose. This book brings in one place the available NDT methods, provides a brief technical overview for each, and discusses the applicability of the methods to specific types of structures. Additionally, the book describes the expected damages/defects and the sources in structures that use steel, concrete, fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP), and timber providing guidance for the selection of the most applicable NDT method.

Dr Armin Mehrabi, PE, MBA, FASCE is an associate professor at the Florida International University (FIU), USA, with three decades of experience in evaluation, inspection, NDT, rehabilitation, and maintenance of bridges.
Dr Saman Dolati is a post-doctoral associate at FIU and bridge engineer at HDR, specializing in innovative design, construction, and inspection. He is a recipient of the prestigious 2024 FIU Presidential Award.
Pranit Malla is a PhD candidate and research assistant at the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in FIU. The current focus of his work is the inspection and evaluation of bridges.
Dr Saman Farhangdoust is an assistant professor in aerospace engineering at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, USA, with expertise in smart material, multifunctional composites, advanced aerospace structures, NDT and self-powered structural health monitoring.
Dr Ziad Azzi is the Director of Engineering at DDA Forensics and an adjunct professor at FIU. He currently serves as an expert consultant and witness in insurance claims disputes.
