This book gives healthcare professionals practical help in dealing with ethical dilemmas. It provides philosophical tools to answer the question of how to provide good care in specific situations.

Although the content is serious, the approach is highly accessible – playful even. The book consists of 25 chapters – one for each letter of the alphabet (X/Y is one chapter). Each chapter is centered around a practical case, and discusses relevant theoretical notions, explaining their philosophical backgrounds and practical consequences. Thus, the book combines a variety of topics with a unity of style and structure. The alphabetic presentation emphasizes that there are no formal principles behind the items.

The book aims to stimulate a creative inquiry in the reader, rather than presenting them with ready-made lines of arguments. It mirrors care practice, as ethical issues and concepts are related to specific situations and arise in unpredictable ways.

This book will be of interest to students and professionals in healthcare who want to understand the ethical issues they experience. It provides conceptual clarification together with an understanding of diverse perspectives. Above all it will provide practical guidance to healthcare professionals and students in providing good care in ethically problematic situations.
