This book dives into the heart of media dynamics during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring how traditional and social media coped with uncertainty and addressed the surge of misinformation. Through a close examination of news articles, social media rumors, and in-depth interviews with Israeli journalists, we uncover the evolving challenges that emerged from the intersection of public health, media responsibility, and crisis communication.
At first, the media was perfectly aligned with the establishment. The book delves into Israel’s unique response, examining how the media’s initial alignment with official directives was reflected in headline news across TV, print press, and major websites. We also investigate the ways in which misinformation flourished on social media, creating a fertile ground for rumors and highlighting the power—and risks—of fast-tracked information in times of crisis. Finally, through interviews with leading journalists, we learned that, in the long term, the key lessons they take from the COVID-19 crisis are a renewed appreciation for professional expertise and the advantages of a hybrid work model, combining fieldwork and office work with remote work.

Prof Azi Lev-On is a faculty member at the School of Communication in Ariel University, Israel. His research focuses on the social and political uses and impact of the Internet and social media, and particularly on their affordances for and usage by citizens in terms of speech and action, and the corresponding institutional responses. His latest book, “The murder of Tair Rada and the Roman Zadorov affair: Establishment, justice, citizens and social media”, was published in 2023.

Dr Judith Yehezkelly is a former senior journalist in Israel with many years of experience. She conducts research on media coverage and its effects on journalists, particularly in emergency and post-traumatic situations.
