This book on Confucian philosophy and moral development begins with the historical development of Confucian philosophy. The most important Confucian philosophers from Confucius through Neo-Confucianism to the present are discussed before discussing the Confucian way of moral development through self-cultivation and moral self-transformation. The main focus here is on the possible contribution Confucianism can make to theory and praxis of moral education. Throughout the book Chinese and Western philosophers have been compared to highlight their differences and similarities as they are often able to complement and enrich each other when they deal with moral ethics. A second book on Confucian philosophy will analyze Confucian policies and their relationships to democracy, as Confucianism can be conceptualized not only as a philosophy of education but also as a system of political thoughts.
