Australia has long relied on powerful allies for naval defence. Once assured of the Royal Navy’s protection, everything changed in 1941 when that promise was not honoured. Australia then formed an alliance with the United States. But alliances can be fragile.

Australia has long relied on powerful allies for naval defence. This book offers an incisive and engaging analysis of the changing role of Australia’s navy. In the colonial period and into the 1930s, it contributed to the defence of the British Empire and Australians were assured that they could rely on the Royal Navy for protection. In 1941 everything changed. Australia confronted threats in its own backyard and repeated Admiralty undertakings to despatch capital ships to the region were not honoured. In 1942, Australia formed a new alliance with the United States. Its recently acquired membership of the AUKUS (Australia, United Kingdom, United States) alliance, which will inevitably be dominated by the United States, will involve risks. Alliances can be fragile and an ally can prove unreliable. The interests of the junior partner might be overlooked. The earlier mantra – “the British Empire, right or wrong” – might give place to “the United States, right or wrong.”

Dr John Seymour retired as a Reader-in-Law at the Australian National University, Canberra, in 1998. He is at present an Honorary Professor at that university. Prior to his ANU appointment, he was the Senior Criminologist (Legal) at the Australian Institute of Criminology. He served as a Commissioner in the Australian Law Reform Commission from 1979-1981, when he led an inquiry into the reform of child welfare law. In his career as an academic lawyer, he published numerous books, reports and journal articles on a range of legal topics. These included Child Welfare (Report No.18, 1981); Dealing with Young Offenders (1988); Childbirth and the Law (2000); and Children, Parents and the Courts: Legal Intervention in Family Life (2016). In retirement, he has developed his long-term interest in naval history.
