Hypoxia, the condition in which tissues in the body experience an inadequate supply of oxygen, is a critical physiological challenge with profound implications for human health. While the body has evolved several adaptive mechanisms to counteract oxygen deprivation, prolonged or severe hypoxia can lead to a wide range of pathological outcomes.
This textbook aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of hypoxia in the human body, covering both its molecular mechanisms and its clinical implications. Hypoxia is not a singular phenomenon; it manifests in diverse forms, such as systemic hypoxia, ischemia, and hypoxic stress at the cellular level. Each type of hypoxia presents distinct challenges and requires tailored therapeutic strategies, making a nuanced understanding essential for clinicians and researchers alike.
Throughout this work, we aim to bridge the gap between basic science and clinical practice, providing readers with the tools needed to approach hypoxia with a multifaceted perspective. It is our hope that this textbook will serve as a valuable resource for students, clinicians, and researchers striving to better understand and address the challenges posed by hypoxia in modern medicine.

Professor Daizo Yoshida holds an MD from Nippon Medical School and a PhD from Nippon Medical Post-graduate School, both Japan. He has held roles as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Tenured Professor and Honorary Director throughout his career, and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow and Visiting Research Scientist in the Department of Neurological Surgery, Yale University, USA. He has held the role of Dean at Itabashi Hospital (2015) and Setagaya Memorial Hospital (2018). He is a member of numerous societies, including the Japanese Neurosurgical Society of America, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and was awarded the Best Presentation Award at the 60th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Neurosurgery Association. His professional majority is in Neurosurgery and Molecular Biology.

Akira Teramoto, MD, PhD, is Vice President of Shonan University of Medical Sciences, Japan and President of the Japan Brain Foundation. An Emeritus Professor at Nippon Medical School, and former President of Tokyo Rosai Hospital, both in Japan, Dr Teramoto has dedicated decades to advancing neurosurgery and medical education. With leadership roles including ex-Vice President of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, he continues to shape neuroscience research and policy in Japan and internationally.
