This book provides an in-depth description of the why and how of offset quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK). The book starts with time-domain and frequency-domain descriptions of offset QPSK using examples, which explain the benefits of the offset. The topics move on to detection, synchronization, differential detection, equalization, and offset QPSK’s relationship to minimum shift keying and other closely related continuous phase modulations (CPMs). Detailed examples illustrate each concept. A large number of plots and figures complement mathematical derivations and analyses.

The book is written for multiple audiences: the practicing communications engineer who needs a technical reference for offset QPSK; researchers who need a reference for the analysis techniques most suitable for offset QPSK; and graduate research assistants looking to get started with offset QPSK.

Michael Rice received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, Atlanta, GA, USA. He is currently a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, USA. He teaches and publishes in wireless communications, random processes, and statistical signal processing. He has over 35 years of experience in wireless communications engineering and is widely published in air-to-ground communication links.

He is the author of the textbook Digital Communications, A Discrete-Time Approach currently in its second edition. He has also authored chapters in three other books on various aspects of digital communications and space-time coding for offset QPSK. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems and member of the Board of Governors for IEEE’s Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
