This book is a comprehensive guide to numerical methods and selected topics in structural engineering, offering practical insights for solving real-world engineering problems. Drawing on over 30 years of professional experience in structural engineering, teaching, and consulting, the author presents a practical and accessible resource for students, engineers, and researchers. The book emphasizes the application of numerical methods for the preliminary design of safe and economical structures, illustrated with worked examples in both SI and US customary units.
Organized into four chapters; Introduction to Numerical Methods, Numerical Structural Analysis, Numerical Structural Design, and Selected Topics, it combines theory with practical examples to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. Clear explanations, structured content, and relevant case studies make it a valuable reference for universities, libraries, engineering firms, and civil engineering societies. It is ideal for academic study, professional development, and use in conferences focused on structural engineering and computational methods.

Mohammed Bin Salem, the main author, is currently Emeritus Professor in the Civil Engineering department at Qatar University, Qatar. He has over 30 years of professional experience in the area of structural engineering. He has secured more than $2.3 million in funded research, with his work published in over 35 peer-reviewed papers to date. His research interests include the earthquake response of structures, the design and analysis of buildings in seismic zones, analytical modeling, and the development of innovative approaches for reinforced concrete and steel design.
Prof Mohammed is also the author of two books on structural analysis and design, including “Practical Reinforced Concrete Design” and
“Structural Analysis and Selected Topics”.
