This book is devoted to the topic of general semiotics. It formulates some of the central laws and parameters of the paradigm of general semiotics, and illustrates them with various examples from branch semiotics – from the systems of semiotics of that are already in use in particular fields of endeavour. These laws and illustrations will prove useful for every distinct instance of branch semiotics, both those that are already well-established and those that will appear in the future.

Abraham Solomonick’s main academic and professional interests are lexicography and the teaching of foreign languages. He is also deeply involved in the field of semiotics, having written a number of books and articles and spoken at international conferences regarding this discipline. In addition to developing his own concept of general semiotics, Abraham has also applied it to various branches within this field, including the semiotics of linguistics, pedagogy, advertising, and cartography.

  • “My article is devoted to the analysis of two books by an Israeli semiotician, A. Solomonick: Positive Semiotics and The Philosophy of Sign-systems. It surveys his conceptual interpretation of signs and sign-systems and his systemic approach to their classification and their hierarchical positions.”
    - Maria M. Pentsova Moscow State Institute of International Relations, in Philological Sciences at MGIMO, no. 54, 2014
  • “A. Solomonick’s book is an important scientific contribution. Its combination of deep theoretical insight and clearly written popular narrative is noteworthy, especially in light of the fact that combining these two characteristics in a single work is truly a difficult task.”
    - Vladimir N. Toporov Linguist and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences
  • “[My] research adhered to the semiotics fundamental positioning as advocated by Charles Peirce (1839–1914) and Morris, and more recently by Stamper with his organisational semiotics, in addition to Solomonick with his evolution of signs systems and its complexity in sign representations.”
