Mysticism and Narcissism details the exceptional personal narrative of a long-serving Cenacle nun during a time of particular historical significance for the Catholic Church. The book’s unique and original approach is highlighted by its application of psychoanalytic theory to questions of theological and Marian identity and relationality, exploring narcissism and mysticism within the context of religious life.

In addition, it provides an excellent historical resource for the study of women’s religious orders in the twentieth century and in analysing the impact of Vatican II on the self-understanding of all women.

Kathleen Lyons Ph.D is a member of the Cenacle Congregation, an Order founded to spread the gospel through the Ministry of Ignatian spirituality, especially to women. She has been engaged in directing retreats and as a Psychosynthesis therapist for many years. Now retired from active ministry, she continues to contemplate the human/divine mystery.

  • "This is an intensely scholarly work following a double dynamic of mysticism and narcissism, resulting in the double methodology of personal narrative and psycho-spiritual analysis... Lyons, true to the breadth and depth of the wise elder, stretches our vision and imagination towards levels of integration that characterise the mysticism of the 21st century. Our production-oriented world has little time for either elders or mystics, in which case the present monograph serves as a wake-up call to transcend our narcissistic preoccupations in favour of an enlarged mystical vision that liberates us all for a more promising and hope-filled future."
    - Diarmuid O'Murchu Social psychologist and author of Quantum Theology
  • "Kathleen Lyons's personal reflection on changes in theology during her life as a Cenacle nun is a precious and provocative chronicle. Descibed as a 'constructive narrative theology' (p.xviii), it is not a museum piece summoning up the shadow of a lost past full of quaint customs and antiquated regulations but a sharply contextualised recollection of a life lived with commitment and passion from the outset and carried through seismic changes with an impressive and courageous fidelity. [...] Written originally as a doctoral thesis undertaken, astonishingly, in the author's ninth decade, Mysticism and Narcissism provides some sharp insights into years which were the context of unparalleled paradigm shifts in the Church and in religious life."
    - Gemma Simmonds CJ The Way, 56:2 (April 2017)
