This book examines philosophical aspects of the future of man and humanity, focusing on questioning what is and what constitutes “being human” in the face of scientific and technological developments and possible coexistence with machines and artificial intelligence. In this sense, the contribution of these authors is the establishment of a new discipline that analyses our technological future, which may be populated by enhanced cyborgs, avatars, and autonomous robots. This scientific-technological future brings about practically inconceivable social and philosophical consequences. Thus, this book answers the questions: What are the ethical and ontological issues and assumptions we make about humans and how will these change with time? Moreover, how should we think of human existence in this new and emerging world?

Ivana Greguric is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb. She has been awarded a scholarship at the Brocher Foundation. She is author of Philosophical Issues of Human Cyborgization and the Necessity of Prolegomena on Cyborg Ethics, a chapter in the book Posthuman Cultures, Guide to Deep Learning Basics, co-author of a chapter in Chuck Klosterman and Philosophy, and co-editor of New Wave and Philosophy.

Nenad Vertovšek is the author of Noam Chomsky and Critique of Contemporary Mass Media, Production of Reality Images and Necessary Illusions and Wooden Steal of Media, which won the international Dialogos Award for the best book on media theory and culture. He is co-author of Media and Youth, Youth – Media Education, Ten Days without a Screen and Dark Side of the Screen, and a member of the editorial board of international electronic scientific journal In Medias Res (Zagreb).

  • “The future is risky to contemplate, there are too many variables. It would not be a future if it was not essentially constructed of the unexpected. But this is what the authors, Ivana Greguric and Nenad Vertovšek, attempt to do. This collection of essays speculate, interrogate, question and sometimes suggest solutions to the future of philosophy, of technology, of the virtual, of the cyborg and of the ethical and ontological issues and assumptions we make of the human.”
