Building Inclusive Communities through Education and Learning

This book is relevant across disciplines - it particularly adds to the studies in the area of adult education and education studies. It is very informative, thought-provoking, and well-supported. One of its main strengths is that it considers learning and education in in a community in all its forms; it explores formal and non-formal education in community institutions, informal learning in everyday life of community practices, as well as intergenerational learning and education. Furthermore, by emphasising the importance of community in relation to education and learning, the authors clearly show that the purpose of education and learning should not be preoccupied only with discourses of skills, competences and employability which dominant international intergovernmental organisations (i.e. the OECD, the EU) disseminate around the globe. The book is a critique of the growing tide of today's individualism, reinforced with the dominant discourse of lifelong learning, and shows the role community can have in the development of social action, solidarity, identity, knowledge creation, dialog, democratic practices and participation of its members, as well as community newcomers, regardless of their legal status. The writing is eloquent yet understandable, making it an excellent resource to students, researchers and educators working in formal and non-formal settings.
