The range of materials science is very vast, and its development is proportionally rapid. This book picks up and explains various topics of materials science using figures and chemical formulae for readers who have a knowledge of chemistry at the undergraduate level. In order to view the progress of materials science, the book is divided into four parts, the first three of which relate topics concerning typical elements, transition elements, and lanthanide and actinide. The fourth section details innovative issues in materials science.

Akio Makishima worked as an analytical geochemist in the Institute for Study of the Earth’s Interior (now the Institute for Planetary Materials) of Okayama University, Japan. He became a Professor at this institute in 2006, and he has published over 60 scientific papers. He is also the author of three books, Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) (2016), Origins of the Earth, Moon, and Life (2017), and Biochemistry in Materials Science (2019).
