By: Christopher Dyczek

This book traces the literary expression of religious fear from the New Testament to scholasticism. It reveals how Franciscan preachers, using the power of community language, forged a confident and peace-seeking theology to counter this legacy.

This book is a translation of J. G. Bougerol’s research, and positions this in relation to recent post-doctoral studies of the Summa Halensis from King’s College, London. It identifies literary aspects of religious fears in medieval and nineteenth century theology as both a New Testament and a scholastic problem. Academically trained preachers, in European culture, are viewed through the lens of dynamic community language, and Franciscan initiatives for confident, peace-seeking theology are mapped out in detail.

Dr Dyczek, OFM, is an English Franciscan theologian. His Fordham University pedagogy shaped the Franciscan Study Centre’s seminary programme in Canterbury. He taught about early Christian writers and the formulation of Christian doctrine at the University of Kent’s Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies. After completing his PhD at St. Mary’s University in Twickenham, he taught Church history at Holy Trinity College in Harare, Zimbabwe. His articles have appeared in The Cord, New Serafika, New Blackfriars, The Pastoral Review and Studii Francescane. He has served on the committee of The Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain. His chapter, ‘Bonaventure and Islam: Possibilities for Dialogue,’ was published in Interpreting the ‘Spirit of Assisi’, edited by M. Diemling and T. J. Herbst (2013). He has given a number of adult education theology talks in Edinburgh and New York.

  • "There is rich information exploring various writers and their views on where hope comes from, and its role in our lives and development of our own faith. Many writers are quoted and it is wonderful to read their own translated words in our present day language of English, so that it is accessible for us here and now."
    - Rhonda Anderson Freelance Illustrative Graphic Designer, Virginia, USA
  • "It seems in light of contemporary global conflict and division the possibility of holding on to hope is very much needed in today’s world. It is fitting, therefore, that theologians should attempt to give sustained attention to its meaning and significance in the Christian tradition and what this might offer wider circles. This is what this book attempts to do in this detailed text-based analysis of the phenomenon.
    - […] I learned much from reading this book and the author’s analysis of little-known theologians who addressed the significance of hope in their writings."
