This volume represents research done at various levels of collaboration, including international, continent-wide, regional and national, in the fields of medical sciences, public health, science policy, science education, agriculture and economic aspects of science.

Specific areas covered here include the manufacture of vaccines in Africa, preventing oral cancer in Nigeria, and decreasing the disparity of childhood cancer globally. Contributions also discuss the prevention of HIV/AIDS and cancer in sub-Sahara Africa, early diagnosis of sarcoidosis, tertiary care of children and teens with type 1 diabetes in Africa, detecting obesity as a maternal perinatal and neonatal risk factor, and improving sanitation and health practices.

Dr Joachim Kapalanga is a Physician-Scientist and Educator who was educated at Yale University, the State University of New York, Queens’s University and the University of Guelph. He is currently Professor (Adjunct) of Paediatrics at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and the South Western Ontario Academic Health Network – Knowledge Translation Group, Canada. His current scholarly and research pursuits are in the epigenetics of neurodevelopmental disorders and exploration of shared endophenotypes in neurobehavioral disorders.

Dennis Raphael, PhD, is a Professor of Health Policy and Management at York University, Canada. His scientific publications focus on the health effects of living and working conditions, the quality of life of communities and individuals, and the impact of government decisions on citizens’ health and well-being. He is the editor of Social Determinants of Health: Canadian Perspectives, Tackling Health Inequalities: Lessons from International Experiences, and Immigration, Public Policy, and Health: Newcomer Experiences in Developed Nations.

Dr Yann Meunier served as a Research Manager for Hoffmann LaRoche Drug Co. and the Export Medical Director for Delagrange Drug Co. He has also served as Director of International Corporate Affairs and Business Development for Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Director of the Stanford Health Promotion Network, and Health Promotion Manager at the Stanford Health Improvement Program. He is the author of five books on public health and tropical diseases.
