This book brings together a number of holistic case-studies focusing on the application of satellite remote sensing to disaster management. It highlights the human factors behind such application, and explores the various fields in which it can be used.

Kazuya Kaku received a Master’s degree from Kyoto University, Japan, in 1978 and a PhD from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2010. He previously worked with the Satellite Applications and Operations Center of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Sentinel Asia project to support disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region by applying satellite remote sensing and Web-GIS technologies. He is currently a Visiting Researcher at the Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC), Japan.

  • “The Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) has been supporting the effort to collect good practices for applying satellite remote sensing technologies to disaster management. This book is a step in this direction and provides good examples of how to apply satellite remote sensing to disaster management for those who are working in disaster risk reduction, such as emergency responders, policy makers, administrative officials, researchers and students. This book is also a good commentary on Sentinel Asia (SA). Although SA is a collective initiative in the Asia-Pacific region, its philosophy, strategies, results, and lessons learned can be extended to other regions. This book is one of the achievements of SA.”
    - Koji Suzuki Project Director, Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC), Japan; National Committee Member for Space Strategy, Japan
