Metabolic and Clinical Perspectives on the Functions of the Liver

By: Åke Nilsson, Stefan Lindgren

This book describes how the liver coordinates metabolism, immunity, and more. It places these functions in clinical contexts, from alcohol-related and metabolic liver disease to cancer and sepsis, and shows how diet and activity affect health via the liver's regulation.

This book describes how the liver executes and coordinates numerous physiological processes including metabolism, innate immunity, blood coagulation, bile secretion, and our symbiotic relation with the gut microbiome. It places the functions in clinical contexts, such as the pathogenesis of alcohol-related liver disease and metabolic (obesity) associated liver disease. It describes how in severe catabolic diseases such as cancer and sepsis, the liver redistributes bodily resources to increase chances of survival and recovery, and how the liver exemplifies many of the effects of diet and physical activity on health and wellbeing, via its regulation of glucose, lipid and cholesterol metabolism, and inflammation. The book is for professionals working in gastroenterology, hepatology, metabolic disorders, and many other medical disciplines, and for scientists and curious students of medicine, nutrition and biosciences.

Åke Nilsson is a former professor of medicine and gastroenterology at Lund University, Sweden, and has extensive clinical, scientific, and teaching experience in hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, and clinical nutrition. Leading a research group that has successfully combined translational and clinical research for four decades, Nilsson also has extensive experience of teaching liver and gut related biochemistry and physiology.
Stefan Lindgren, former professor of medicine and gastroenterology at Lund University, Sweden, has combined successful clinical research in hepatology and inflammatory bowel disease with a deep involvement in educational issues. He has held leading roles in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at Lund University. He has been President of the World Federation for Medical Education and the European Federation of Internal Medicine, and President of the Swedish Society of Medicine and the Swedish Society of Gastroenterology.

  • "Given that the liver carries out and coordinates numerous and complex biological processes, it is not easy to summarize its role. In this book the authors do it by combining overview and depth in an impressive way. Explaining the unique role of the liver in a systematic way, they also place the functions in a clinical context. This compact but highly informative book will be of interest to medical professionals in many disciplines and to curious scientists, and medical and bioscience students who want to understand their liver and gut-liver axis better."
    - Associate Professor Hannes Hagström, MD, PhD Consultant in Hepatology at the Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden
