This book argues that these nations often slavishly emulate Western values to the detriment of indigenous ones. It challenges the postcolony to ground itself in local experience and then nativise external values, which entails delicately sifting through both the domestic and foreign worlds to build a decent and humane society.

Kenneth Usongo received a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Denver, USA, and a doctorate in English Literary Studies from the University of Yaoundé 1, Cameroon. Aside from his scholarly books Character and the Supernatural in Shakespeare and Achebe, Politics and Romance in Shakespeare’s Four Great Tragedies, and Art and Political Thought in Bole Butake, he has also published essays on British, African, African American, and world literature in various journals and edited collections.
