This book addresses the inherent ambiguities in ‘childhood’, a widely familiar term. The main problem lies in the definition, duration and diverse socio-cultural implications of ‘childhood’, which is a part of everyone’s life. To explore the literary, artistic and cultural representation of this constantly evolving term, this book provides insights into a number of relevant issues relating to childhood. Explicitly rejecting the idea of childhood as an unambiguous monolith, it offers various critical approaches to the treatment of childhood with all its complexities in art and literature.

Dr Kanak Kanti Bera is an Associate Professor of English at Panskura Banamali College (Autonomous), India, teaching for over two decades. His research interests focus on language, linguistics, English language teaching (ELT) and communication, and he received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati.

Dr Anindita Bhaumik is an Associate Professor at the Department of English of Panskura Banamali College (Autonomous), India. She obtained her doctoral degree for her research on the representation of ‘others’ in Wilkie Collins’s fiction from the University of Kalyani, India. Her areas of interest include popular literature and marginality studies.

Dr Krishanu Maiti is a Faculty Member at the Department of English, Panskura Banamali College (Autonomous), India. His areas of interest include animal studies, posthumanism and environmental humanities. He is the editor of the books Posthumanist Perspectives on Literary and Cultural Animals (2021) and Global Perspectives on Eco-Aesthetics and Eco-Ethics: A Green Critique (2020), and his most recent essay on “Buddhism and Veganism” was published in The Routledge Handbook of Vegan Studies (2021).
